March 2024 Newsletter

Welcome to the MEA Digital Newsletter

A Message from MEA President Michele Chicarelli

I am happy to welcome you to the first edition of the MEA Quarterly Digital Newsletter! Here you will find updates, reminders, and more to help keep you informed, connected, and engaged with your union.

Founded in 1926 by City employees, MEA is an independent, member-controlled organization. City decision makers come and go but through it all, MEA is consistently a strong voice for its members, because MEA is all of us. Thank you for being part of MEA. We are stronger together.

Please read on and I hope you enjoy!

In solidarity,

Michele Chicarelli, MEA President

What’s Next? MEA MOU Reminders

It’s been almost a year since your elected MEA Negotiations Team secured a Tentative Agreement for the current Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) after a hard-fought process over several months, and MEA members overwhelmingly ratified the historic MOU.

There is a lot to celebrate in the MOU over the next months:

  • Mark your calendars!
    • Cesar Chavez Day – Sunday, March 31 (observed on Monday, April 1, 2024) – MEA negotiations made Cesar Chavez Day a paid holiday for City employees, making San Diego the first city in California to honor the great labor leader.
    • Juneteenth – Wednesday, June 19 – MEA negotiations made Juneteenth a paid holiday for City employees. While Juneteenth is recognized as a holiday by all 50 states and the federal government, it is not a paid holiday for most.
    • Monday, July 1 – additional 4% General Salary Increase. This is the third pay raise of this new contract, following a 5% increase last July 1, 2023 and another 5% increase just a few months ago on January 1, 2024.

View the highlights of the current MOU.
