Negotiations Update – January 25, 2021

Dear MEA Members,

We hope you are well as we begin a New Year full of possibilities.

Earlier this month, San Diego Superior Court Judge Richard Strauss agreed with us and our attorney, Ann Smith, that Proposition B was unlawful, invalid, and should be removed from the City Charter. And our new Mayor Todd Gloria repeatedly expressed his support for City workers. This is significant as negotiations for the new MOU continue and the annual City Budget process begins.

In his State of the City address, Mayor Gloria stated that the fiscal problems facing the City are “underscored by the fact that our City’s workforce morale has been battered because they are overworked, underpaid, and underappreciated.” On January 5th, Mayor Gloria also issued a press release agreeing with us that Prop B was a disaster for the City. (Read the Prop B updates in the Latest News section of the MEA website.)

Increased Member Communications During This Key Time

We’ve been getting a lot of questions about negotiations for the new MOU and the upcoming budget process and wanted to be sure to share key information. Since we are heading into a critical few months for all of us, we will be sending information more often to help keep you informed and engaged. Please take some time to click on and read these updates and let us know if they are hitting the spot.

Next up for Negotiations – Bargaining Sessions With the City on January 28 and February 4

Together with Ann Smith, your Negotiating Team and staff have been hard at work negotiating the non-economic issues for the new MOU. We have two upcoming bargaining sessions at the end of January and beginning of February where we will be trying to finish the non-economic issues and begin discussing economics.

Final offers from MEA and the City are due by the end of March. More information about the timeline for negotiations can be found in Article 4 of the MOU.
