IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM MEA FOR EMPLOYEES WORKING IN EXECUTIVE COMPLEX (1010 SECOND AVENUE)

IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM MEA FOR EMPLOYEES WORKING IN EXECUTIVE COMPLEX (1010 SECOND AVENUE)

On Tuesday, you should have received a message from the City’s Chief Operating Officer Scott Chadwick explaining that the City is pursuing alternate work locations for employees at the Executive Complex (1010 Second Avenue).  Employees are directed NOT to report to work at their Exec Complex office for at least the rest of this week and until further notice from the City.

Simply put, the Exec Complex building renovation and the dangerous conditions that have followed have been a nightmare for City employees.  The scope of this major construction project is not compatible with ongoing workplace operations for employees.

Since the inception of the construction last summer, MEA has continued to stress to the City that such conditions are unacceptable.  And given the County of San Diego’s positive asbestos test last week, MEA’s position is that NO employee should be directed to set foot in the Executive Complex again.  We have made it clear in our communications with City officials that the City should instead put all of its efforts into immediately relocating employees.

The good news is that the City appears – at least for now – headed in that direction.  Stay tuned for further updates from the City and from MEA.  We will continue to push that the City in good conscience must make alternate arrangements for its employees such that no one is forced to resume any work in that building.

Finally, we wanted to thank all of the employees who have reached out to us over the last several months to share what is going on at that location.  The City has – belatedly but thankfully – heard our voice and appears to be headed in the right direction.  If you have specific questions, don’t hesitate to contact Cathleen Higgins at MEA at 619-264-6632.
