Celebrating 100 Years of MEA – The GMM, the Proclamation, and the Video

Dear MEA Members,

It was wonderful to see so many of you at our General Membership Meeting (GMM) earlier this month! Happy 100th Anniversary MEA!

The Balboa Park Club Ballroom was packed almost to overflowing and the energy was high for this Centennial event.

The evening’s program was brief but impactful.

Council President Joe LaCava re-created presenting MEA with a City proclamation for the San Diego Municipal Employees Association 100th Anniversary Day. In August, the proclamation was unanimously approved by the City Council in Council Chambers. Your MEA Executive Board, MEA Counsel Ann Smith, and MEA General Manager Michael Zucchet accepted the proclamation on behalf of all MEA members.

Then was the premiere of the MEA Centennial Video. Produced in collaboration with KPBS, the video celebrates some of the most important issues accomplished by MEA members working together for the last 100 years. . .the pension, employer-sponsored health insurance, the wages, hours, benefits, and working conditions fought for and won in all of the Memorandums of Understanding over the years, and so much more. For 100 years, MEA has provided members with a voice in the workplace.

None of these things have come easily but when members stand together, we can achieve great things. Thank you for what we’ve accomplished so far, and here’s to another 100 years.

Since 1926, founded by City employees, for City employees. Happy 100th Anniversary MEA!
