Tentative Agreement Reached with Library Administration on Work Schedules- Vote for One Schedule

On Monday, October 26, 2015, MEA team members, Library Administration and City Human Resources representatives met to discuss the responses to the MEA survey. Fifty nine employees responded to the survey. The results were 41 were opposed to the alternate Fri/Sat schedule, 10 were in support and 8 were uncertain. Many thanks to the 59 employees who took the time to respond to the survey.

Administration considered the opinions and suggestions expressed and although they are firm in their position regarding assigning full time employees to work Saturdays (which is supported by the mayor and city council) they were agreeable to the following proposals made by your MEA team:

The impacted employees will vote to select ONE schedule that will be implemented on a six month trial basis for all impacted employees. (See details below) ONLY ONE SCHEDULE WILL BE IMPLEMENTED, SO PLEASE VOTE!

It was agreed that all permanent half-time employees will participate in the same schedule as full time employees, resulting in half time employees no longer being required to work every Saturday.

Full time employees who work in the branch libraries will only be required to work until 8:00 p.m. on either Tuesday or Wednesday, but not both nights. Two shifts for Tuesday and Wednesday will be created for full time staff, for example, a 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. shift and an 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. shift, subject to modification.

Once the new Library hours are implemented, half time employees who work at Central may choose to either work a 3 day or 4 day workweek.

Your MEA team believes this is the best outcome and result of meeting and conferring on the impact of the decision to expand Library hours. Although full time employees will be required to work two Saturdays per month, you have a vote on which schedule will be implemented. One schedule is the alternate Friday/Saturday schedule which means you would work four days, have one day off, work the following day, have another day off, work 5 days and then have two days off (a weekend). The 3 day, 1 day weekend schedule provides for working 5 days, then one day off, work five days and have 3 days (Saturday, Sunday, Monday) off.

Once the new schedule is implemented with a 30 day notice, the Library Labor Management Committee will meet as normal and will discuss any concerns brought forward during the trial period. Thank you for your participation and vote.
