Further Update Regarding Comp Time — Success!

Following up on our e-blast sent Friday regarding comp time, we are pleased to report that we now have confirmation from City officials that they will be rescinding their unilateral directive issued last Monday that all comp time accruals cease on January 1, 2019.

As a result of our challenge to that announcement and follow-up discussions with the responsible City officials, the City will rescind that directive shortly and there will be no change to the comp time benefit for now. The City has agreed that we will instead work together to find an acceptable path forward which addresses the City’s identified IRS issues but does not change an employee’s option to accrue comp time instead of taking overtime in cash.

We will begin a meet and confer process with the City in January regarding any changes to the comp time process that may be necessary to keep the City in compliance with applicable tax laws. We do not expect that process to result in significant changes to the benefit, but rather more technical changes regarding how the comp time benefit is administered. We will obviously keep you posted as that process plays out next year.

In the meantime, comp time continues and the directive cancelling comp time issued last week by the City will itself be cancelled in the coming days. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to call MEA at 619-264-6632.
